At Make Sunsets, our customers aren’t just numbers on a screen—they’re pioneers in a movement to take real, immediate action against climate change. One of those pioneers is Ruban Rajendran, who has been supporting Make Sunsets after a long search for solutions that felt both urgent and effective. We sat down with him to learn more about his journey, his frustrations, and why he believes in what we’re doing.
A Search for Urgent Solutions
Sivaruban has always cared deeply about climate change, but like many people, he struggled to find ways to meaningfully contribute. For a while, he made regular contributions to Wren, a carbon offset company. While he respected their work, something about it didn’t sit right. “The solutions they were supporting didn’t feel urgent enough,” he explained. “We haven’t even curbed emissions—we’re just slowing the increase. And even that, not really.”
That’s when he stumbled upon a X thread by Crémieux explaining Make Sunsets and the science behind stratospheric aerosol injection (SAI). The more he read, the more it made sense: cooling the planet right now, rather than waiting for slow-moving carbon reduction efforts to take effect, could save lives. “It’s a trade-off, sure,” he admitted. “But the alternative is millions of people suffering and dying from extreme heat, disasters, and food shortages. This is something we can do that has an immediate impact.”
The Challenge of Convincing Others
Despite his conviction, Sivaruban has found it difficult to get others on board. “I’ve told my friends about it, but honestly, it’s been hard work just getting them to buy carbon credits, let alone something new like cooling credits.”
He sees two main barriers:
-
Apathy or helplessness – Many people feel like their small actions won’t make a difference. “They ask, ‘What’s my however-many-pounds of CO₂ really going to change?’”
-
A lack of personal impact – Living in the UK, where the climate remains relatively mild, has insulated many from the worst effects of global warming. “We get one hot day a year over 30°C, and people enjoy it. They don’t see what’s coming next.”
He also struggles with how to bring it up. “I don’t want to be preachy with my friends, but it’s frustrating because I know how urgent this is.” It’s a challenge many Make Sunsets supporters can relate to.
A Unique Perspective on SAI
Sivaruban’s background gives him an edge in understanding the bigger picture. Working adjacent to the energy sector, he had already encountered discussions on aerosol emissions.
“I knew about SAI in theory, especially in the context of how reducing SO₂ emissions from shipping was actually accelerating global warming. But I didn’t know anyone was actually doing it—until I came across Make Sunsets.”
What’s Next for Sivaruban?
By the end of the conversation, Sivaruban was more committed than ever to spreading the word about Make Sunsets.
“I need to do a better job evangelizing this. The argument is too convincing not to.” He even took away a new strategy—showing friends videos of Make Sunsets launching balloons and seeing how they react.
As for Make Sunsets, we’re proud to have customers like Sivaruban—people who think critically, seek real solutions, and push to make a difference. If you’re reading this and wondering, ‘What can I do?’, the answer is simple: Join us. Take action. Help cool the planet.
